Caring Beyond the Operating Room

Over the years, our team has carefully reviewed the outcomes of patients who underwent Atresia repair surgery. During these discussions, we discovered that nearly 10% of our Atresia repair cases were revision surgeries. Among those revision cases, more than 90% shared a common challenge: local physicians often did not have enough information about the patient’s original surgery, surgical anatomy, or post-operative condition.

Atresia is a rare congenital ear disorder, and Atresia repair is considered one of the most complex procedures in Neurotology. Successful long-term care requires not only surgical expertise, but also a deep understanding of each patient’s anatomy and the details of the original operation. Without this information, it can be extremely difficult for local physicians to provide specialized follow-up care.

For this reason, we made the decision to travel across the world and establish a clinical base in China.

Our goal is not only to provide surgical care, but also to build a long-term support system for patients and families. We encourage every patient to involve a local physician in their care journey. By working together, we can train and collaborate with local doctors so they become more familiar with the unique needs of patients with Atresia and Microtia.

We believe this partnership will help reduce the need for revision surgeries, improve post-operative care, and expand awareness and expertise in treating these rare congenital conditions. Through education, collaboration, and continued support, we hope to improve outcomes for patients both now and in the future.

This experience made us realize that successful Atresia treatment does not end with surgery alone. To provide patients with the long-term care, communication, and specialized follow-up they deserve, we established a clinic in China — bringing expert care closer to home while building a stronger local support network for patients and physicians alike.

One of the biggest challenges in establishing our surgical program in China was adapting to the differences between the American and Chinese medical systems. In the United States, many surgical instruments are named after their inventors, while in China, instruments are often named according to their function. To ensure patient safety and surgical efficiency, our team carefully reviewed and reorganized the compatibility and identification of all surgical instruments and equipment used during the procedures.

To further improve communication inside the operating room, we invited a Chinese anesthesiologist from Harvard Medical School who is fluent in both English and Chinese to join our surgical team. In addition, all patient services and international coordination were entrusted to my assistant and the director of this project, Mr. Jin Hongan. He has several years of working experience in American hospitals and has long been responsible for the reception and care of international patients.

I have great confidence in our team, and in 2024, we successfully completed our first group of surgeries in China. Among these cases, two patients achieved hearing outcomes that exceeded expectations, recovering to hearing levels of 16 dB and 24 dB respectively.
